Invisible aligners

At Clínica Prisma in Coimbra, Spark™ clear aligner treatment is a removable option for correcting certain tooth position and bite problems. Suitability is confirmed after assessing the teeth, gums, jaws and treatment goals.

Treatment uses a series of custom-made aligners, each designed to produce small, planned movements. The outcome depends on case complexity, biological response, daily wear time and clinical follow-up.

Spark™: Clear Aligner System

Benefits of clear aligners

  • A discreet solutionAligners are transparent, making them less visible than traditional braces, which is particularly beneficial for adults and adolescents who want more discreet treatment.
  • Greater comfortMade from a soft, flexible material, aligners tend to be more comfortable to wear than metal braces, which can irritate the mouth.
  • RemovabilityAligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing, making oral hygiene easier and allowing a more varied diet during treatment.
  • Fewer dietary restrictionsAs aligners can be removed during meals, there are no significant dietary restrictions associated with them, unlike fixed braces, which require special care with certain foods.
  • Ease of cleaningAs they are removable, aligners are easier to clean than fixed braces, helping to maintain oral health during orthodontic treatment.
  • Less impact on daily activitiesInvisible aligners generally cause less disruption to patients' daily activities, as they do not significantly interfere with speech or sporting activities.
  • Digital planningScanning and 3D planning allow the planned movements to be visualised and progress to be monitored. The simulation is a planning tool, not a guarantee of the clinical outcome.

Guide to treatment

When they may be suitable

  • Crowding, gaps between teeth and various bite problems, according to the diagnosis.
  • Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment.
  • Adults and adolescents seeking a removable, discreet option.
  • Patients able to follow the daily wear time and scheduled changes.

Expected duration

It can range from a few months to more than a year, and complex cases may require longer. The estimate is presented in the 3D plan and may change according to biological response, necessary refinements and adherence to daily wear.

How the process works

  1. 01

    Clinical assessment

Confirmation of oral health, orthodontic diagnosis and suitability for aligner treatment.

  2. 02

    Digital records

Intraoral scanning, photographs and indicated tests to prepare the study.

  3. 03

    3D planning

Simulation of movements, definition of stages and presentation of the plan and cost estimate.

  4. 04

    Active treatment

Sequential provision of aligners and daily wear according to the clinical prescription.

  5. 05

    Reviews and retention

Appointments to check progress, any refinements and retention after alignment.

Frequently asked questions

Who can use clear aligners?

Can aligners treat every case?

No. Some movements or jaw problems may benefit from fixed braces, additional techniques or another approach. The assessment compares suitable options.

How many hours a day should they be worn?

They should be worn for the daily period prescribed by the orthodontist and removed only at the recommended times. Insufficient wear may delay or compromise the planned movements.

Can I eat with aligners in?

As a general rule, they should be removed for eating and drinking anything that could stain or deform the material. Water is usually the safe option while wearing them, unless advised otherwise.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment can last from a few months to more than a year, depending on complexity, the number of aligners, individual response and cooperation. The 3D plan provides an estimate, not a guarantee.

Do aligners hurt?

Temporary pressure or sensitivity is common at the start of a new stage. Severe pain, edges that hurt or an aligner that does not fit should be assessed.

What happens after the last aligner?

Retention is usually necessary to help maintain tooth position. The type and wear schedule are determined at the end of treatment.

How much do Spark™ aligners cost?

Clear aligner treatment is available from €1,950. The final cost varies according to the complexity of the case, the number of aligners and specific treatment needs, and is subject to prior assessment and a cost estimate.
